Posted: 10 Feb 2004 I am off on a business trip to Qatar in a couple of weeks and am trying to locate a qatar specific species lists or field guides to reptiles, mammals and birds. Any ideas anyone, I have found plenty of resources for neighouring Saudi, but am not sure of differences in distributions so these lists may be of no use? |

Posted: 11 Feb 2004 If you fancy something a little more swashbuckling to read on your flight across you could try: A Camel Journey across the Rub' Al Khali Bertram Thomas; B. K. N. Wyllie The Geographical Journal, Vol. 78, No. 3. (Sep., 1931), pp. 209-238. which was the only article to come up in a JSTOR search for "Qatar and reptile". http://uk.jstor.org/ The authors start their trek somewhere on the coast near the border between present day Oman and Yemen and end up in Doha, Qatar. It would appear they collected all sorts of specimens en route, including a variety of reptiles listed on pages 228 to 230. Good luck Ewan. Posted: 14 Feb 2004 I cannot find anything specific to Qatar but there is the small booklet by M.Gallagher 1990 Snakes of the Arabian Gulf & Oman small booklet M.Gallagher covers this area. M.Gallagher 1971 Amphibians & Reptiles of Bahrain privately published this is just off Qatar and would expect to find the same species Gasperetti,J. 1988 Snakes of Arabia Fauna of Saudi Arabia 9 169-450 Leviton,Anderson,Adler & Minton. 1992 Handbook to Middle East Amphibians & Reptiles S.S.A.R. There are other publications but most would be more difficult to get hold of. The Journal Fauna of Saudi Arabia does have various papers and there is several Lizard papers in the Journal of Oman studies. Special reports. The herpetofauna of the United Arab Emirates would probably be the same as this is the closest. British Herpetological Society Librarian and member of B.H.S Conservation Committee.
